چکیده

There is now a general agreement that sharks, and pelagic sharks in particular, are facing widespread declines in population level due to fishing activity (Pauly et al., 2003). Recent studies suggest dramatic reductions in relative abundance of up to 80% have occurred in as little as 15 years for some species (Baum et al., 2003; Myers et al., 2006), trends most likely linked to greater target catch and bycatch rates fuelled by increased demand for shark fins and meat for human consumption. Although some fisheries assessments indicate less pronounced declines for large pelagic (Sibert et al., 2006) and coastal sharks (Burgess et al., 2006), undoubtedly they are particularly susceptible to over-harvesting on account of slow growth rates, late age at maturity and relatively low fecundity. Many pelagic sharks are now red-listed by the World 13

A new acoustic tailbeat transmitter for ®shes

A new acoustic transmitter for monitoring the tailbeat frequency of free-swimming ®shes and sharks is described. The transmitter is externally mounted on the ®sh's caudal peduncle and produces an acoustic pulse with every lateral movement of the tail. Field tests on obligate-swimming juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) show these transmitters accurately telemeter tailbeat de ̄e...

Kinematics and critical swimming speed of juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks

Kinematics and critical swimming speed (Ucrit) of juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks Sphyrna lewini were measured in a Brett-type flume (635 l). Kinematic parameters were also measured in sharks swimming in a large pond for comparison with those of sharks swimming in the flume. Sharks in the flume exhibited a mean Ucrit of 65±11 cm s-1 (± s.d.) or 1.17±0.21 body lengths p...

Diel and tidal rhythms in diving behaviour of pelagic sharks identified by signal processing of archival tagging data

Patterns of vertical movement in pelagic predators can be highly complex, reflecting behaviours such as foraging, thermoregulatory excursions and spawning. Here we used fast Fourier analysis to identify periodicity in the vertical movements of 6 basking sharks Cetorhinus maximus from archival tagging data that totalled 595 d. We analysed quantitatively fine-scale vertical movements of basking s...

Water-escape velocities in jumping blacktip sharks.

This paper describes the first determination of water-escape velocities in free-ranging sharks. Two approximations are used to estimate the final swimming speed at the moment of penetrating the water surface. Blacktip sharks were videotaped from below the surface and parameters were estimated by analysing the sequences frame by frame. Water-escape velocities averaged 6.3 ms(-1). These velocitie...

Novel Acoustic Technology for Studying Free-Ranging Shark Social Behaviour by Recording Individuals' Interactions

Group behaviours are widespread among fish but comparatively little is known about the interactions between free-ranging individuals and how these might change across different spatio-temporal scales. This is largely due to the difficulty of observing wild fish groups directly underwater over long enough time periods to quantify group structure and individual associations. Here we describe the ...
